[00:00] * Set by jacky on Tue Mar 02 18:03:23
[00:51]<+camerongray> It's USB type C to a regular USB type A
[00:51]<@BC_Programming> did you get it off Amazon?
[00:54]<+camerongray> Nah, direct from manufacturer
[00:54]<+camerongray> They have a funny invite system to control demand
[00:54]<+camerongray> The ones on Amazon are risky - Usually the chinese ones flashed with the international firmware by the seller

[19:22]<+camerongray> hey jacky!
[19:22]<+camerongray> Just got back from London, took my SDR down - They have so many pirate FM stations, more than licenced ones!
[19:41]<@jacky> camerongray: Hello
[19:41]<@jacky> was away from keyboard. sorry
[19:41]<@jacky> heheh
[19:41]<+camerongray> np
[19:41]<@jacky> the government doesn't go after them, eh?
[19:41]<@jacky> or... are they offshore?
[19:42]<+camerongray> They sieze the equipment if they find but they rarely prosecute
[19:42]<+camerongray> Broadcast from transmitters placed on tall buildings
[19:42]<@jacky> wow.. they must be busy, to not track them down
[19:42]<@jacky> that's money... if they are taking up bandwidth that could otherwise be sold
[19:42]<@jacky> interesting
[19:42]<@jacky> but... sounds like you had fun
[19:42]<@jacky> :)
[19:42]<+camerongray> It's very hard to trace the people doing it - They broadcast as internet streams then all the transmitter does is connect to the stream over most likely a cellular connection and then broadcast that
[19:43]<+camerongray> So there is no real link between the studio and the transmitter that can be traced
[19:43]<@jacky> ok on hard to find the people
[19:43]<@jacky> but to find the transmitter?
[19:43]<@jacky> they can do that...
[19:43]<+camerongray> Yeah, they get taken down every so often
[19:43]<+camerongray> But new ones just go up
[19:43]<@jacky> then again, I guess they are small and low power
[19:43]<@jacky> so they can afford to make a new one
[19:43]<@jacky> I wasn't thinking of it that way, at first
[19:44]<+camerongray> And even if the people are found they have the excuse of "We are just an internet stream, someone else must just be retransmitting it"
[19:44]<+camerongray> Yeah, they are quite weak
[19:44]<@jacky> I was thinking of the real thing... you know, with tubes two feet tall. heehehe
[19:44]<@jacky> what freq?
[19:44]<@jacky> here, FM is around 100 MHz
[19:44]<+camerongray> I'm pretty sure one of them was transmitting from a building right next to me, if not the roof of the hotel I was in, it was off the scale on the signal strength
[19:44]<+camerongray> FM here is 88MHz to 108MHz
[19:45]<@jacky> same here
[19:45]<@jacky> or at least.. very close
[19:45]<+camerongray> yeah
[19:45]<@jacky> I'd have to look at the dial on a radio, to be sure
[19:45]<@jacky> heh
[19:46]<+camerongray> lol
[19:46]<@jacky> ok.. other chat came up
[19:46]<@jacky> anything else for right now?
[19:48]<+camerongray> Nah, just tryign to find the recordings I made
[19:48]<@jacky> ok
[19:48]<@jacky> catch you later
[19:48]<@jacky> as always, good to chat with you
[19:48]<@jacky> :)
[19:48]<@jacky>
[19:48]<+camerongray> cya!
[20:02]<+camerongray> jacky: If you see this - These are the recordings I made: https://soundcloud.com/cameron-gray-39/sets/london-fm-pirates/s-y9a5h
[21:50] * jacky (the_kink@mib-FF12807.slsbmd.east.verizon.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
[22:33]<+camerongray> Bloody hell Quantos, this stuff you are sharing on Facebook is ridiculous...
[23:00]<Quantos> I know eh? I think the guys posting on my wall actually believe that shit
[23:11]<+camerongray> You're posting it...
[23:12]<Quantos> Oh, that shit, yeah, it's pretty funny
[23:13]<+camerongray> No it's not
[23:13]<Quantos> It's hilarious, everyone that knows me thinks it's funny
[23:13]<Quantos> Yeah, it is
[23:13]<+camerongray> What? All the racist crap is "funny"
[23:13]<+camerongray> Bloody hell
[23:13]<Quantos> The people that know me know I'm not racist, the others can keep sending the hate mail
[23:13]<Quantos> I don't really care
[23:14]<Quantos> Heck, the hate mail is usually pretty funny
[23:14]<+camerongray> Well it sure looks bad
[23:15]<Quantos> Some of it's a little dark, admittedly
[23:15]<+camerongray> No, it's downright offiensive and racist
[23:15]<Quantos> No, it's not, anti-religion is not anti-racist
[23:16]<+camerongray> *rolleyes*
[23:16]<Quantos> It is meant to be offensive though, that's what makes it funny
[23:17]<+camerongray> If you say so...
[23:17]<Quantos> You usually don't point out my sense of humor to me, maybe it has been over the top a bit
[23:17]<+camerongray> Well, when you share stuff it sure looks like you are endorsing it
[23:18]<+camerongray> As does you posting stuff directly that is not being shared saying the same thing
[23:18]<Quantos> hmmm
[23:18]<+camerongray> And to be clear, yes refugees do have phones, if you were fleeing war wouldn't you grab yours?
[23:18]<Quantos> I'd grab mine if I was fleeing a tax collector
[23:23]<Quantos> You're probably right though, you usually are
[23:24]<Quantos> I think I'll tone it down a lot then
[23:35]<+camerongray> I was trusted to do a live demo at a confrence this weekend, it actually worked! https://twitter.com/Keelyjacob/status/645235773080518657
[23:35]<Quantos> Cool, taking a look
[23:36]<+camerongray> Also, the tweet was wrong, it was 55,000,000 rows, not 55,000 :P
[23:36]<Quantos> is that lines of code?
[23:37]<+camerongray> The number or the screen?
[23:37]<Quantos> The 55,000,000
[23:37]<+camerongray> Rows of data, basically every bit of analytics data collected for a large UK bank's website for 20 days
[23:37]<+camerongray> Basically imagine a spreadsheet with 55,000,000 rows and 500+ columns
[23:38]<Quantos> 55000000 in 20 days?
[23:38]<+camerongray> BIG DATA!
[23:38]<+camerongray> Yeah
[23:38]<Quantos> Nope, I honestly can't imagine anything even close to that
[23:39]<+camerongray> The demo was showing how to process it at a reasonable speed
[23:39]<Quantos> Oh cool
[23:39]<+camerongray> And it didn't explode which was surprising, live demos are scary
[23:39]<Quantos> Yeah, a db that big would take a fair bit of power
[23:39]<+camerongray> To get a count of each browser followed by how many hits were collected from it took 30 seconds to process
[23:40]<Quantos> I know, I did a live demo at a tech school for ironworking once
[23:40]<+camerongray> And that's running on £10,000 worth of hardware
[23:40]<Quantos> What a disaster
[23:40]<+camerongray> haha
[23:40]<Quantos> Holy snikeys, 30 secs?
[23:41]<Quantos> $16 000 computer?
[23:41]<+camerongray> A pair of $8000 ones
[23:41]<Quantos> Yeah, that should be fine, just put it over there by my desk :D
[23:41]<+camerongray> We're going to be getting more
[23:41]<+camerongray> 128gb RAM each with a pair of 6 core CPUs
[23:42]<Quantos> Oh, I think I just got a stiffy
[23:42]<+camerongray> When we buy the production hardware we'll probably go for 64gb RAM but 8 or 10 core CPUs
[23:42]<+camerongray> And more HDDs for better speed, current limitation is the disks
[23:42]<+camerongray> But SSDs are too small/expensive
[23:42]<Quantos> Wow, what do you think of those new cpus intel put out?
[23:42]<+camerongray> So we'll just pack each machine with 10 1tb HDDs
[23:42]<Quantos> Sandylake, windylake, something like that
[23:43]<+camerongray> Skylake? Pretty good yeah
[23:43]<Quantos> That's it
[23:43]<+camerongray> These machines are Haswell-E
[23:43]<+camerongray> DDR4 RAM
[23:43]<+camerongray> Dell Poweredge R630s
[23:43]<Quantos> LOL
[23:43]<Quantos> Nice
[23:44]<+camerongray> We currently have a job that works over the same data to do quite complicated work (Called Attribution Modelling if you are interested). This is a Perl script I wrote last year and takes 4 hours to process a day's worth of data every night. The new system takes 11.5mins for the same amount of data
[23:44]<+camerongray> Quite a difference
[23:44]<Quantos> That's huge
[23:45]<Quantos> That's like comparing a 286 to a pentium
[23:45]<+camerongray> haha yeah
[23:45]<Quantos> Hey, I think I got that network issue I was having sorted out
[23:46]<Quantos> I thought it was xchat for windows doing it, but it continued after uninstalling it
[23:46]<+camerongray> What we basically have to do is go through the data and look for when people buy something, then for each of those look back at their previous actions to find what adverts/banners/pages they saw -Not fast!
[23:46]<Quantos> Patio had me delete the network and rebuild it - seems to be working
[23:46]<Quantos> So it logs the adverts they are shown too?
[23:47]<+camerongray> Yeah
[23:47]<Quantos> Probably the duration of time that goes for selecting it from when it displayed too
[23:47]<+camerongray> We could work that out but that's even more intensive :P
[23:48]<Quantos> Yeah, I can imagine, I could see where marketers would want that information though
[23:49]<Quantos> This is hilarious, the i7 and i5 in my room - when it gets chilly I close the door for ten mins
[23:49]<+camerongray> haha
[23:49]<+camerongray> For me most of the heat is my monitors
[23:49]<+camerongray> The machine is always quite cool unless I'm really stressing it
[23:50]<Quantos> I don't get that, but it's been a while since I ran a CRT
[23:50]<Quantos> Yeah, mine don't stress much, I don't really have anything that I do that works them hard, but they still get warm
[23:51]<+camerongray> Mine are just massive CFL panels so they get hot
[23:51]<+camerongray> Not LED
[23:52]<Quantos> CFL?
[23:52]<Quantos> I didn't know they made those
[23:52]<+camerongray> Flourescent tubes
[23:52]<+camerongray> CCFL*
[23:52]<Quantos> How big are these?
[23:52]<+camerongray> 27"
[23:52]<Quantos> I thought they would be bigger
[23:53]<+camerongray> http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hazro_hz27wb.htm
[23:53]<+camerongray> Nah, any bigger would be silly
[23:53]<+camerongray> Unless they were higher resolution there would be no point for my use
[23:54]<Quantos> Have you looked at the color gamut on those?
[23:54]<Quantos> That's absolutely incredible
[23:54]<+camerongray> Yeah, they are pretty high end :P
[23:54]<Quantos> Now that's what I need for my photos
[23:54]<Quantos> I did about 6 hours yesterday and realized that I forgot to change my monitors preset
[23:54]<+camerongray> Ouch
[23:55]<+camerongray> At least get some sort of IPS one if you don't already :P
[23:55]<Quantos> Back to the beginning
[23:55]<Quantos> I love the ips
[23:55]<Quantos> It almost has a better gamut result just because you can view it from off angles
[23:55]<+camerongray> Yeah
[23:55]<+camerongray> My laptop is also IPS
[23:55]<Quantos> Nice, that's your new one/
[23:55]<Quantos> ?
[23:56]<+camerongray> Pretty sure everything I have is actually apart from my TV which is PVA
[23:56]<+camerongray> Laptop? Had it a while
[23:56]<Quantos> Oh, is that the one you got in january I think it was/.
[23:56]<Quantos> ?
[23:56]<+camerongray> Yeah
[23:57]<Quantos> So I'm still considering building a chasis for this HP
[23:57]<+camerongray> Which was the same as the one I bought back in November 2013 but with a touchscreen
[23:57]<Quantos> How do you find the touchscreen?
[23:57]<+camerongray> Never use it, it's disabled
[23:57]<+camerongray> It was more to protect the screen
[23:57]<Quantos> LOL, that's probably what I'd do too
[23:58]<+camerongray> My laptop sees some abuse so the bare panel was getting damaged
[23:58]<Quantos> Well, you move it around a fair bit
[23:58]<Quantos> Not like me
[23:58]<+camerongray> That got replaced under warranty so I sold that and then got the touchscreen one which has a glass cover over the screen
[23:58]<Quantos> Nice
[23:58]<+camerongray> It's rare for me to not have it with me
[23:58]<Quantos> I wonder if it's a gorrilla glass or if it's just tempered
[23:59]<Quantos> gorilla I guess
[23:59]<+camerongray> Not sure
